A downtown medical marijuana dispensary has until 1:15 p.m. today to shut down or face legal action from the city.
The city attorney's office on Friday handed the 24-hour notice to the Purple Elephant Cooperative because the city does not permit medical marijuana dispensaries.
"They have to be shut down, rolled up, gone and out of business," City Attorney Michael Lawson said.
A director at the dispensary, Nathan Coleman, on Friday said he received the notice but was unaware that the business must close.
"We will work hand in hand with the city because we don't want any problems with them," Coleman said. "I do believe Hayward will be a sympathetic city for our cause."
Coleman said the cooperative moved into the building at 22138 Mission Blvd. in January.
An anonymous call last week to police tipped officials to the operation, Lawson said.
If the Purple Elephant Cooperative is still in business after the 24-hour deadline, Lawson said, the city has a number of strategies to get the business out.
"We have court orders and potential criminal enforcement immediately available," he said.
Earlier this year, another collective, the Green Light, opened briefly in January but shut down after it was served with a similar order, Lawson said.
