Hard or Soft water? Can I use one of these for DWC?

Hard water, however find out how bad it is by measuring the TDS of the water.

Ideally you'll want purified water that has virtually nothing in it. Get water from a Safeway or other places that you can fill up 5 gallon jugs from. Or of course buy yourself an RO unit.

I have a similar situation. I have 2 wells. One is at pH 5.3, the other 6.8. They have PPM's of 20 and 80 respectively. I have learned to mix them to achieve the desired pH of 5.8 . Keep in mind that some nutes have buffers that lower the pH. I put mark on jugs and if after I add nutes the pH is not where I want, I make a new mark on the jug so next time it will be closer to the correct value. I also learned that my pH meter reads a lower value when the water is cooler. I now have several jugs of water sitting around so they can warm up to room temp. I hope this helped some. Good luck!

A very experienced user named Docbud once said that you would have trouble with tapwater that had over 100PPM.
