Has anyone ever tried growing autos directly in the ground before? If so how did that go?

I got to try everything I wanted to this year indoor/outdoor except autos directly in the ground.

Got 3 popped out in a 100 gallon in the garden , auto regs so hoping for a female
And this was started in a small pot , upto a gallon ,and finally into a 150+ gallon mound all done outside no artificial / supplemental lighting used, premixed soil , gallon had very little amendments, and mound was mixed with 5 pounds NutriRich granular, Mycorrhizae, and teas to "activate" for the season

My autos grow more like stalks than this. I'm wondering if you topped this auto to make it more bushy please?
