Legislators are starting to tackle the medical marijuana issues across Montana, and on Thursday the governor stopped by a cannabis facility in Missoula to learn what may need to be done to address the problems with the legislation.
"Tell me what it is that you would recommend that we change in Montana's medical marijuana law that would improve the business and maybe give it a little bit better error of legitimacy," Gov. Brian Schweitzer said while at Montana Pain Management.
He sat down with Montana Pain Management President Rick Rosio to discuss what needs to be done about medical marijuana, a business which seems to be rapidly growing out of control.
Schweitzer said when voters went to the polls medical marijuana was simply a concept.
"We didn't put the boundaries in at that time and now the business has gotten out ahead of regulatory environment and we need to build some boundaries," he said.
He added that one solution could be limiting the number of medical marijuana grow operations and the number of providers. Such a move would make it more manageable for the state to keep track of the business.
"We need to inspect these operations to make sure that they are growing only what they need to their patients and they're supply marijuana only to their patients," Schweitzer explained.
Rosio said that having the Governor at his business was a great opportunity to show him how a medical marijuana business can work.
"The governor had some wonderful, kind words and was really assuring that he's going to take a very practical stance on this and try to fix where the problems are," Rosio said.
Schweitzer pointed out that visiting the facility would help him answer questions from the public. He also plans to talk with other governors about problems that they face with medical marijuana.
The Democrat became one of the first governors in the U.S. to visit and medical marijuana business.
