Governor Chris Christie has severely weakened if not downright nullified the New Jersey Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act, a final act of power by outgoing Governor Corzine. Christie has created bureaucratic hurdles that have brought medical marijuana to its very knees, begging for mercy. Who knows, maybe Medical Marijuana refused to endorse Christie's reelection bid.
At glance is one family's struggle top provide their chronically ill toddler with medical marijuana, an issue over which Christie balked and one in which the father actually approached Christie on the campaign trail. Christie, who thinks offering kid like games in the form of online gambling is totally rational but yet doesn't believe in medical marijuana--claiming it will lead to a slippery slope, eventually signed the bill allowing for children access to edible medical marijuana products. But Brian and Meghan Wilson, the Scotch Plains parents of the sickly Vivian, now plan on moving to Colorado, where dispensaries sell the drug in a butter or other edible form. New Jersey dispensaries, which are all operated by key Christie allies and yet another key government agency stuffed with Christie cronies, still only sell it in a smokable form. After all, Christie is all about Christie and his political aspirations are just way too important than the needs of sickly children. .
Like well-trained collies at Westminster, the Wilsons did their part and hurdled through all the ridiculous bureaucratic hoops required to obtain a Medical marijuana ID card in a state with the strictest requirements, When a dispensary opened in Egg Harbor, Atlantic County, in October, Vivian obtained an ounce. However, even though Christie green-lighted edibles, the dispensary still only sells the smokable type. Worse yet, when Wilson attempted to locate a lab that could test the oil to be converted to butter so that Vivian's dose could be determined, Wilson said the Department of Health said it did not yet have the ability to do this. This, of course, prompted the Wilson's to move to Colorado. Colorado, a state where both medical marijuana and some recreational marijuana are both legal and which raised $1 million in revenues in but one freaking day, is light years ahead of an otherwise forward-looking New Jersey being held back by a right-wing Tony Soprano.
But Marijuana Santa Claus (think Zach Galifinakis) came early this past holiday season when the owner of Magical Butter, a company that sells a machine that converts cannabis into a butter, and another benefactor had pledged $10,000 to cover relocation expenses for the Wilsons. It was a Christmas gift beyond our wildest dreams. We thought a friend wanted to deliver Christmas cookies," Meghan said in an e-mail to The Inquirer. (Philly.com) If only Magical Butter were operated by Christie allies, then perhaps the Wilsons wouldn't have to had move.
