Leonard Marshall was once a destructive defensive end for the New York Giants, famously cracking Joe Montana's ribs in the 1991 NFC Championship Game.
Now Marshall hopes to ease the pain of NFL players by pushing the league to remove marijuana from its list of banned substances, the New York Daily News reported.
In August, Marshall became a vice president and brand ambassador for Home Towne Rx, a Lawrenceville-based chain of independent pharmacies, according to a statement from the company. Home Towne Rx hopes to be among the first to provide cannabis-derived medicines if the drug is legalized in New Jersey.
Marshall, a Paramus resident, told the Daily News he takes cannabidiol, a marijuana extract, to treat his headaches, a lingering effect of the blows to the head he took over a 12-year NFL career.
The former Giants great was a keynote speaker in at the Cannabis World Congress in June in New York, and his biography on the Home Towne rx website describes him as a medical marijuana investor.
Researchers have told Marshall he's at risk for CTE, a degenerative brain disease affecting many former NFL players.
Marshall told Sports Illustrated that he has been taking cannabidiol since February. The hemp oil doesn't contain THC, which is responsible for the high associated with marijuana.
"It helps with headaches, it helps to calm me down, it helps with mood swings and depression," he said.
