Georgia Medical Cannabis Bill Set For Thursday Showdown

The Georgia Legislature will have about 14 hours on Thursday to decide if they want to broaden access to Georgia's medical cannabis registry.

Thursday is the last day of the annual legislative session, when lawmakers will work from mid-morning until about midnight, scrambling to put bills on Gov. Nathan Deal's desk.

The House and Senate both need to approve the measure that would add patients who have seven new diagnoses, including autism and post-traumatic stress disorder, to the list of those who can join the state's medical cannabis registry.

Patients who join the registry can possess up to 20 ounces of a fluid made from specially-bred cannabis.

Supporters, such as bill author state Rep. Allen Peake, R-Macon, say medical cannabis could provide relief to thousands of suffering Georgians.

However his bill ran into opposition in the state Senate last week. Senate Health and Human Services Committee Chair Renee Unterman, R-Buford, said she would not hold a hearing on the bill. She said she heard from patients and families who did not want the bill, and that her committee was busy with some 70 other bills.

Peake is using a legislative maneuver, amending his bill to another bill, to try and get quick one-day passage.
