Fresno County sheriff's deputies ripped out about 3,500 marijuana plants with an estimated street value of $42 million near Dunlap on Thursday morning, a sheriff's lieutenant said.

The eradication was part of Operation Mercury, an ongoing six-county effort from Kern to Merced counties targeting large marijuana grows, said Lt. Rick Ko. Thursday's operation was on five acres near Dunlap and Hopewell roads, south of Highway 180.

A federal search warrant was served and about six people were detained, but no arrests were made, Ko said. The investigation is ongoing. Medical marijuana recommendations were posted, Ko said, but any pot grows are illegal under federal law.

As part of the operation, grows were eradicated near Reedley on Tuesday and in the Sequoia National Forest on Wednesday, he said. Several search warrants are scheduled to be served next week, he said.

The Sheriff's Office receives about 10 complaints a day about marijuana grows, Ko said.

In February, the Sheriff's Office began notifying property owners to remove marijuana grows, Ko said. Pot grows on properties where owners have not complied are being targeted for eradication.

The owners face criminal charges and the loss of their land, he said.
