The co-founder of a Plattsburgh, New York company that is competing for a license to grow medical marijuana, says Clifton Park is one of four upstate dispensaries that he plans to open.
Douglas Butdorf, president of North Country Roots, also is planning to establish dispensaries in Utica, Gouverneur in St. Lawrence County and Plattsburgh, where he also is pursuing permission to grow and process medical marijuana.
Butdorf and North Country Roots will file an application by the end of this month for a license to grow, produce and sell the drug in New York. The industry is expected to mean big business for the state since the Gov. Andrew Cuomo began pushing to make medical marijuana legal for people with severe illnesses.
Marijuana has been legalized in roughly two dozen U.S. states for medical or recreational use.
Butdorf is scheduled to outline his plans for a dispensary in Clifton Park at 7 p.m. today during the town board meeting.
Supervisor Phil Barrett says he will ask Butdorf to discuss the proposed location as the town and public determine how and where the dispensary could work under current zoning laws.
"This obviously is brand new for Clifton Park," Barrett said. "There is nothing in our code that references marijuana dispensaries... The prudent step is to pursue a process that would include public input and identify a zoning designation."
North Country Roots is among a growing number of investors that are vying to become one of five projects in New York allowed to start operations to grow and distribute medical marijuana.
The state also is expected to authorize the operation of 20 dispensaries across New York to give easier access to patients.
Butdorf says North Country Roots picked Clifton Park because it is located in the center of a large population base and it would provide easy access from the Northway, I-87. Each dispensary is required to have a pharmacist on state at all times and they must be located in a highly secure building, he says. Only patients who have been authorized to receive medical marijuana would be allowed in the building.
Butdorf says he has been in discussion with several landlords about potential sites in Clifton Park. It is not clear, which sites he is scouting out.
Business partners Ted Berndt and Stephen Lulla have teamed up to apply for a license to grow marijuana in Cambridge, about a half hour east of Clifton Park.
Butdorf of North Country Roots is pursuing plans to rent space in Plattsburgh inside a 130-year-old paper mill, which has been transformed into offices, manufacturing and other multi-use space.
