Georgia - Recently, Colorado legalized recreational marijuana. And one family in Forsyth believes it will be beneficial to pass it in Georgia. Four-year-old Haleigh Cox has uncontrolled epilepsy and takes multiple medications to tame the convulsions. But they come with debilitating side effect. "Haleigh has about 70 plus seizures a day," says mother Janea Cox. "She's unable to sit unassisted. She's unable to hold her head up and a lot of that is because of the seizure medications shutting down her brain so much."
Her parents, Brian and Janea Cox, are willing to do anything to save their child.including breaking up their own family. Janea talked to parents of children with similar symptoms who used medical marijuana to combat the problems. They tell her it worked. So Janea will be packing up her bags to move to Colorado. "And if we leave Colorado with this kind of medication, it will be a felony," she said.
Brian will not be able to make the journey with his wife and daughter because of work. "Hopefully this medication will work and we'll be able to get our child back," he said. Colorado recently joined Washington as states that have legalized recreational marijuana. 18 other states allow some use, primarily for medicinal purposes. Janea is using Haleigh's story as a way to raise awareness about the positive effects of medical marijuana in hopes of legalization.
"I'm not asking for recreational use by any means. I just want medical marijuana for a life saving treatment," said Janea. She and Haleigh plan to move to Colorado for treatment at the end of March. Janea is part of a group that plan to lobby state legislatures when session begins in February to hopefully put medical marijuana on the map.
