A Jacksonville mom is worried about the treatment options for her son because none of the nurseries granted licenses from the state are able to produce the Charlotte’s Web brand.
Bridget Bateman’s 8-year-old son, Preston Bateman, has a severe form of epilepsy and has multiple seizures a day.
“We’ve tried 13 medications that have not worked, and some have made him worse,” Bateman said.
Bateman has been hoping the medical marijuana commonly known as Charlotte’s Web will be able to help Preston.
The medical marijuana treats people with epilepsy and other illnesses like cancer.
Last week, the state issued five licenses to nurseries throughout the state, including one in Alachua County.“
All of these children that have been taking it are doing well. If not seizure-free, a huge reduction,” Bateman said.
Loop's Nursery and Greenhouses in Jacksonville would have been the only nursery able to produce the Charlotte’s Web brand because the owner was licensed with the product’s creator, but the state did not issue the nursery a license.
Bateman is now worried about her options with the other nurseries.
“I’m not even sure what plant is going to be available at those places,” Bateman said.
The five nurseries will be able to produce a variety similar to Charlotte’s Web, and they will be able to open dispensaries across the state.
Bateman said she’s hopeful that even if it’s not the exact plant she was hoping for, she’ll find something that helps Preston.
"Just to have a better quality of life,” Bateman said. “Even if he can’t function as a normal 8-year-old, at least not be debilitated by seizures all day long.”
