FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Flagstaff City Council sent its staff back to the drawing board to craft a proposal to restrict where medical marijuana dispensaries could open in the city.
Council members said a staff-authored proposal was too restrictive.
Arizona's medical marijuana law won approval last month by 4,300 votes in a statewide election, but in Flagstaff it was passed by a 59-to-41 margin.
Council member Art Babbott said adult-oriented businesses like strip clubs face less stringent zoning than marijuana dispensaries would have under the staff proposal.
Only 118 areas of the thousands of commercially zoned properties in Flagstaff would be viable under the staff proposal.
Council members said they want less restrictive zoning.
