A Silver Springs man was arrested Thursday on warrants for marijuana cultivation and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Drug agents said Walter Arthur Carpenter admitted that marijuana found in a room he rents belonged to him and that he learned to take care of the plants by watching YouTube videos.
Marion County sheriff's deputies took Carpenter, 54, into custody Thursday afternoon in the 18800 block of Southeast 19th Place and taken to the Marion County Jail.
The marijuana cultivation arrest was the third since Aug. 11, but members of the Unified Drug Enforcement Strike Team said they do not believe the cases are connected.
According to drug agents, agents received a tip last month through Crime Stoppers that Carpenter had a grow operation at the Silver Springs residence.
With the information, agents obtained a search warrant and executed it several days later, according to an arrest report. In a bedroom, agents found 13 marijuana plants, and equipment such as lights, timers, a fan and other things used to grow the plants.
They also recovered processed marijuana, jars and plastic bags, and a pipe, a grinder and rolling papers for using marijuana.
Looking through the room, agents found mail that had Carpenter's name on it, and a motorcycle and van on the property that were registered to the him.
Agents interviewed a woman who told them that Carpenter was a tenant at the home. He was working in Jacksonville when the search warrant was executed.
A drug agent later spoke to Carpenter by phone, and he admitted growing the marijuana for personal use, according to the arrest report. He said he got the equipment on Amazon and learned how to grow and take care of the plants by watching YouTube videos. He said he had been growing marijuana since December 2016 or January 2017.
Agents got a warrant for Carpenter's arrest a few days after talking with him.
It was the latest in a string of marijuana grow operations busted by agents.
On Aug. 11, they arrested Jody Ray Boone, and seized 25 marijuana plants and a pound of packaged weed from a Dunnellon home he was renting. Boone, 41, was previously found guilty of cultivating cannabis.
Four days later, Adrian Marcos Montano was arrested at an Ocala home on suspicion of having 16 marijuana plants in the residence, according to an arrest report. The 44-year-old man told a drug agent that he had recently visited stores in Colorado that sold products used for growing marijuana indoors. He said his plan was to harvest the marijuana when it was ready and sell it.
