Some Plant City leaders want to be prepared for medical marijuana before voters decide whether to make the drug legal at the polls in November.
"The purpose of this ordinance is for the city commission to address where medical marijuana businesses should be located," said Plant City attorney Kenneth W. Buchma.
For now the discussion about if they would be allowed or where medical marijuana dispensaries would be located in the city is back to square one.
Leaders agreed that it was a huge undertaking, especially since it hasn't been voted on yet. Ultimately they decided to eliminate the second public hearing on the topic and go back to the drawing board to figure out just where a dispensary should be allowed to open up shop in the city.
It's a second look that one speaker at the meeting urged city leaders to take.
"It works and it's not as negative as the pharmaceutical medications," the speaker said. "And the amount of money that could be made in a place like Plant City growing cannabis is astronomical. I mean strawberries would be no more. You guys could make a lot of money and it would be good for private business and it's the way to go."
And even though city leaders didn't say if they agreed with the speaker, there was one thing they could all agree on.
"I think it's crystal clear tonight that we do not want to impede or slow down or stop the progress on being able to provide medical marijuana to our citizens for medical reasons," said Plant City Mayor Rick A. Lott.
The city attorney plans to come back next month with a clearer picture about where they would possibly allow these facilities.
This would only happen if voters vote yes on Amendment Two in November to legalize medical marijuana. A similar amendment was put before voters in 2014, but failed to reach the required 60 percent of votes cast to pass.
