Fort Meyers - Medical marijuana is now legal in Florida, but doctors at Southwest Florida's largest mental health facility won't be prescribing the drug.

"It's like seeing somebody with high blood pressure, and you give them a blood pressure pill, and at the same time you give them a salty pretzel; it's kind of defeating the purpose," said SalusCare medical director Dr. Adrienne Eisner.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD is one of the debilitating conditions that qualifies for medical marijuana under Amendment 2, but doctors at SalusCare won't be writing prescriptions for it.

"The patient population that we serve, there are a lot of psychotic disorders, schizophrenia," Eisner said.

Some of those patients are also struggling with substance abuse.

"Although cannabis can be used medicinally for multiple different things, it can exacerbate the symptoms of those disorders," Eisner said.

It can heighten paranoia, depression, and anxiety.

"I think that's forethought on their part and you know, sets a tone and maybe drives the opinion of other doctors," said Fort Myers resident Don Brownell.

Eisner said SalusCare is not against medical marijuana, it's just not for their patients.
