Kelley McDaniel, the daughter of Collier County Commissioner Bill McDaniel, was arrested Wednesday night, along with her live-in boyfriend, after detectives found a pound of marijuana, fertilizer and growing equipment in a garage on the property, deputies said.
Kelley McDaniel, 20, was living with John Todd Dearriba, 23, in a guest room attached to the garage of a Logan Boulevard home owned by Bill McDaniel and his ex-wife. Bill McDaniel does not live on the property in Golden Gate Estates.
Detectives with the Collier County Sheriff's Office had a search warrant for the home. They found a small black tent in the garage that covered a high-intensity light bulb, a digital scale, air ducts and fertilizer, the arrest report states.
Mature marijuana plants hung drying from the ceiling and there were several ledgers lying around with names, dollar amounts and types of drugs sold, the report states.
Dearriba had two boxes of ammunition – 9 mm and .25 caliber – in the bedroom, detectives said. He has been charged with possession of ammunition by a felon, along with making and possessing marijuana.
Kelley McDaniel also was charged with making and possessing marijuana.
Kelley McDaniel, a student at Florida Gulf Coast University, helped organize her father's campaign for county commissioner last year.
When reached by phone, Bill McDaniel said he and his family are trying to move forward.
"From a personal level, I certainly apologize to the residents of Collier County for any potential embarrassment," McDaniel said.
"My family is suffering right now," he said.
"Daddies don't get to pick their daughters' boyfriends."
Bill McDaniel was the sole commissioner Tuesday to vote against lengthening a ban on medical marijuana dispensaries to the end of the year.
"I voted to uphold a constitutionally protected business," he said Friday.
McDaniel repeatedly has said he doesn't think the county should ban, even temporarily, types of businesses. He has voted against proposed moratoriums on self-storage units, pawn shops, car washes and gas stations.
