It's a sure sign that the times are a-changin'.
The first hemp/cannabidiol dispensary in Pueblo and the state has opened in a building that formerly housed the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
Herbal Extracts, 3416 N. Elizabeth St., is a combined venture between CBDRx and the online business Herbal Extracts, owned by Paul Gluchanicz.
While CBDRx specializes in the development, cultivation, processing and wholesale distribution of hemp-based CBD products, Herbal Extracts bills itself as a "leader in the emerging market for dietary and nutritional supplements derived from certified organic hemp."
According to Mark Brannigan, CEO of CBDRx, Herbal Extracts leases the dispensary space from CBDRx, which also privately labels all products offered.
These products, including pills, tinctures and bulk coconut hemp oil – which can be added to beverages or used as a topical – are designed for those seeking the medicinal benefits of cannabis sativa without the psychoactive effects associated with THC.
No license is required to purchase the items, Brannigan said, "and we prefer that our customers be at least 18 years old."
Brannigan said the therapeutic benefits of hemp-based cannabinoid products are numerous and have been confirmed by studies.
"CBD, which is the main cannabinoid in hemp, helps with everything from cancer to daily aches and pains," Brannigan said. "We just had a customer who bought from us tell us he reduced his prescription pain meds by 80 percent.
"So it's great for anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, pain, cancer, epilepsy . . . the list goes on and on."
The irony of a hemp dispensary located in a former law enforcement building hasn't been lost on the owners. A sign that reads "Parking for Evidence Loading Only" has been altered, with the letters "CBD" superimposed over "evidence."
CBDRx, which operates a grow east of Pueblo, recently received permission from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to brand its hemp crop – harvested from a 120-acre parcel – as "certified organic" under USDA rules.
Noted Brannigan, "The CBD industry is plagued by products from unidentifiable overseas sources making dubious, unverifiable and false claims. We are understandably proud to be one of the first companies in the United States offering organic CBD products with the high quality, consistency and transparency that this industry demands."
