The Planning Commission will discuss a proposal for allowing recreational marijuana businesses in the city at a special meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
The meeting, at 7 p.m. at City Council chambers, 5694 Second Ave., is in preparation for a public hearing on recreational marijuana, to be held as early as Oct. 16.
State rules will allow one retail outlet for marijuana in Ferndale, in addition to businesses that grow and process the plant. City staff recommended that the commission consider existing retail areas for Ferndale's one marijuana shop, and the manufacturing areas for growing or processing, said Jori Burnett, the community development director.
The state Liquor Control Board will begin accepting applications for marijuana-business licenses on Nov. 18, with recreational marijuana becoming legally available next year.
