Two Nebraska families met with Gov. Pete Ricketts Tuesday to discuss legalizing medical marijuana in the state.
Members of the Lawlor and Gillen families have epilepsy, and the parents of those patients say the substance would control their children's seizures. They spent 30 minutes with Ricketts at the Capitol, but Ricketts wasn't convinced to change his stance on the issue.
"Time is of the essence, and they don't understand the urgency behind this," Shari Lawlor said. "I just work with [my daughter] to try and get the best she can possibly be."
Gov. Ricketts released a weekly column Tuesday titled "Marijuana is a Dangerous Drug." He questioned the safety of the drug and said that should be determined by the FDA after rigorous review.
"If the FDA would approve the drug and how it's supposed to be used, that puts it in the category of all the other drugs the FDA approves and makes it just like any other drug doctors prescribe," Ricketts said.
Lawmakers are expected to debate a medical marijuana bill this year. Under that proposal, patients and caregivers would have to register with the state before getting the substance.
