Montevideo, Uruguay (AP) – Exits polls show that ruling party candidate Tabare Vazquez has won Uruguay's presidential election, returning to power a center-left coalition that has legalized same-sex marriage and moved to create the world's first national marijuana marketplace.
Three exit polls broadcast by the South American country's main television stations all show Vazquez topping Luis Lacalle Pou of the conservative National Party by roughly the same 10-point margin in Sunday's runoff vote.
Two exit polls show Vazquez with 54 percent of the votes compared to 41 percent for Lacalle Pou, and the third puts his victory at 52 percent to 42 percent. Official results have not yet been released.
Vazquez, who was president from 2005 to 2010, replaces outgoing President Jose Mujica. Both men belong to the Broad Front coalition.
