The city of Eureka will announce on Friday which business proposals will be recommended to apply for the limited number of conditional use permits available to open a medical marijuana commercial facility.
The council-appointed Medical Cannabis Selection Subcommittee sifted through 25 proposals that were submitted in December. The applicants were from both local and out-of-town sources, and the committee narrowed down its recommendations to three proposals, said Community Development Director Sidnie Olson.
"They seem to have a very strong desire to move the therapeutic and medical aspect forward," Olson said of the businesses the committee is recommending.
The city will release which proposals are being recommended with the staff report on Friday for the March 2 council meeting, said City Manager David Tyson. If the council approves some or all of the recommendations, those chosen will then be invited to apply for the conditional use permits and go through the normal application process.
The recommendation process was a result of the council passing a medical marijuana ordinance that went into effect in September, allowing a limited number of medical marijuana dispensaries and processing facilities in the city. It was modeled after Arcata's ordinance, implementing a land use-based approach that also regulates personal patient gardens.
Where Eureka differs is that no dispensaries were located in the city when it began crafting its medical cannabis ordinance. The ordinance imposes a cap on conditional use permits available for medical marijuana commercial facilities: four for processing and cultivation facilities, which can each have two dispensaries, and two for dispensaries that stock cannabis not processed or grown in Eureka.
The subcommittee that reviewed the proposals included Councilwomen Linda Atkins and Marian Brady, former Councilman Jeff Leonard, and acting City Attorney Paul Hagen.
The recommended proposals will be included in the council's agenda on Friday. It will be available at City Hall, 531 K St., Eureka, and online at City of Eureka Website - City Council Agendas.
