EC Readings With Chelated Nutrients

Hi everyone,
probably a really silly question, but if we get our EC/PPM readings based on electrical conduction of positively charged nutrient ions. How do we know we're getting accurate readings when using chelated nutrients or adding chelating agents (ie.FV) when the whole point of chelating is neutralizing the charge?

The way I understand it, chelated compounds “don’t count”. Since the chelated elements (mostly micronutrients) are protected and don’t increase the ec. The caveat being, it’s been 45 years since college chemistry!
