Waterloo, Iowa - A high school football coach has stepped down following an arrest for drug possession.
Antonio Nathaniel Mays resigned his duties as head football coach for Waterloo East High School Tuesday morning, said Sharon Miller, spokeswoman for the school district.
Waterloo police arrested Mays, 31, of 150 Sabrina Circle, Monday night for misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
Mays is not otherwise employed by the Waterloo school district. He is a teacher at East through Iowa Jobs for America's Graduates, which the district has a contract with. His status in that position wasn't immediately known.
Mays said he will be releasing a statement in the near future.
According to court records, patrol officers noticed a purple Cadillac Deville without a front license plate in the area of Airline Highway and Logan Avenue at about 9 p.m.
Police pulled over the car in Mays' driveway and noticed Mays inside making "furtive movements" toward the vehicle's center console, according to court records.
Mays allowed officers to search the car, and allegedly admitted he had marijuana in his pants pocket, records state. Police also found a small amount of marijuana in the car.
Mays was arrested and released from the Black Hawk County Jail at 11:14 p.m. Monday after posting bond, according to jail records.
Mays is the second high school coach to be arrested for drugs recently.
On Dec. 15, Edward Madlock, who is the East High girls basketball coach, was arrested for possession of marijuana following a traffic stop.
Mays was a recent Courier Communications "20 Under 40" honoree, an annual recognition program for young community leaders.
