Supporters of the decriminalization of marijuana in Santa Barbara are one step closer to putting a controversial initiative on the November ballot.
The ballot initiative with more than 11,000 signatures, about twice the number needed to qualify, has been submitted to the city clerk. It calls for a new law requiring marijuana offenses be the lowest priority for the Santa Barbara Police Department.
"We don't need to be locking people up in jail and spend money for jail cells for something that is innocuous," said David Bearman, M.D. Sensible Santa Barbara.
Santa Barbara Police Chief Cam Sanchez said that the initiative "doesn't make a whole lot of sense." He was doubtful that it is even enforceable, and refuted the backers' claim that it will save the police department money.
Backers of the pro-pot law admitted the measure is intended to make a statement to lawmakers. Some consider it a half-step toward legalization.
Santa Barbara is not alone, voters will decide a similar measure in Santa Cruz, Portland, and Santa Monica. Oakland and Seattle already have a law on the books.
The Santa Barbara city clerk has 30 days to determine if enough valid signatures were gathered to put the initiative on the November ballot.
