DRUG TRIAL BEGINS FOR FORMER GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE The medical marijuana trial of former Libertarian gubernatorial candidate Steven Wynn Kubby and his wife, Michele, returned to Placer County Tuesday morning. The Kubbys are charged with cultivating and possessing marijuana for sale, two counts of conspiracy and various other counts. They contend they were growing the pot for medicinal use. A 53-year-old cancer patient, Steven Kubby ran for governor in 1998 and played an instrumental role in the 1996 passage of Proposition 215, a ballot measure that allows the doctor-recommended use of marijuana for medicinal purposes in California. Kubby claims that pot has kept him alive for 15 years. The pair's trial was postponed in November when Michele Kubby, 33, was confined to bed by doctors, who cited complications related to her pregnancy
