Local narcotics officers seized more than 600 marijuana plants with an estimated street value of $620,000 last week during an annual drug sweep known as Operation HEMP.

Using a helicopter from the National Guard, officers with the Livingston and Washtenaw Narcotics Enforcement Team searched fields, parks and farms Aug. 23-24.

The plants — some as tall as 10 feet — were spotted in several undisclosed locations throughout the county, officers said.

Last year, LAWNET seized less than 200 plants in Operation HEMP (Help Eliminate Marijuana Planting), which is Michigan’s domestic marijuana eradication and suppression program.

An estimated 120 suspected marijuana plants were found in 2004.

Officers with the Fowlerville, Green Oak Township and Unadilla Township police departments as well as the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department and Brighton post of the Michigan State Police assisted in the search.

Michigan’s Operation HEMP drug enforcement effort began in 1983 and is funded by a grant from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration.
