Drug Agents Arrest 15 in Raids on Major Marijuana Club

Federal agents went after a major Bay Area marijuana club Tuesday, raiding eight locations in San Francisco and Oakland, arresting 15 people including the group's leader and seizing nearly 13,000 plants.

The target of the raids, which prompted swift criticism from some medical marijuana advocates, was New Remedies Cooperative and its 36-year-old leader, Sparky Rose. The San Francisco resident is well-known in medical-marijuana circles and has been under investigation for several months.

The group, formerly known as Compassionate Caregivers, ran a dispensary in the Mission District, a pair of cultivation warehouses on Polk and Tennessee streets, and a temporary-employment agency for pot growers called Potent Employment Solutions, said Javier Peña, who heads the Drug Enforcement Administration's San Francisco office.

Rose, whose convertible Porsche Carrera was one of four cars seized by federal agents, was arrested at his home on suspicion of conspiring to distribute marijuana and laundering proceeds, Peña said. In addition to the plants, federal agents seized $125,000 in cash Tuesday.

"Make no mistake, the defendants were in the business of dealing dope," Peña said in an interview. "They were using the pot clubs as facades to make millions of dollars. We're trying to show the public these aren't for the sick or ill. (The goal) is to pocket drug proceeds."

The raids prompted a group of protesters to gather outside the New Remedies club on Mission Street near 14th Street, where federal agents used sledge hammers to break up ATM machines inside the business. Authorities said marijuana was being grown inside the dispensary, one of an estimated 30 to 40 medical-marijuana clubs in San Francisco.

Representatives of the New Remedies Cooperative and Rose were unavailable for comment. But other advocates of the medicinal use of marijuana said the raids were uncalled for.

"This is an outrageous waste of resources,'' said Shona Gochenaur of Axis of Love San Francisco, a medical marijuana advocacy group.

San Francisco Supervisor Chris Daly said he was concerned about a raft of recent federal raids on pot clubs in Northern California.

"Generally speaking," Daly said, "swooping in is not helpful in terms of the safe distribution of medical cannabis to those who need it."

Under Proposition 215, passed by state voters in 1996, it is legal in California to use medicinal marijuana with the recommendation of a doctor. Federal anti-drug laws, however, contain no such exemption for cannabis. Drug Enforcement Administration spokeswoman Casey McHenry said Tuesday that "everyone that sells marijuana or cultivates marijuana is at risk."

New Remedies continued to operate even though the government moved in November to seize $1.5 million in assets, records show. The company, which has operated more than a half-dozen storefronts around the state as a nonprofit enterprise, bought marijuana from growers and distributed it from Oakland by courier vans, the government alleged in that civil action.

Prosecutors said the club's patients were given the names of doctors willing to prescribe medical marijuana and would then receive a prescription without being given a physical examination. One doctor saw 49 patients in one day, at $150 each, prosecutors said.

Besides Rose, those arrested Tuesday were James Daley, 56, and Sean Anderson, 22, of San Francisco; Johnny Seto, 32, Mark Miller, 53, and Tracy Smith, 32, of Alameda; Kevin Ellis, 28, and Jason Matthewson, 29, of Pinole; Alfaro Munoz-Bebullida, 33, and Steven Navarro, 35, of Richmond; Mistalee Chiame Wang, 25, and Jaime Perreira, 26, of San Leandro; Ben Blair, 31, of San Pablo; Irene Matsuoka, 27, of Crockett; and Amber Froiness, 26, of Berkeley.

"Truth is beauty.. Beauty is truth."

I read alot of pot related stories and follow the activism of leagalization and decriminalization very closely and would like to mention something.... please try not to flame me as I am only expressing my opinion.
Anyone who grows or sells MJ for profit is ruining all hopes of leagalization.
Greedy bastards. Help out your fellow man and not get rich by exploiting a unfair situation. What would God say?.... I understand the cost of cultivation but making a profit on "medication" is the biggest problem with health care. Medication and healthcare should be a RIGHT for all humans, rich or poor. The privitization of healthcare is an evil that is spreading... the rich live longer to become richer and the poor scrape togeather everything they have and give it to rich people in hopes of living a better healthier life.
WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!!
A long time ago doctors and nurses worked pro-bono to better the health of mankind, now most want to do as little as possible for as much money as they can get.
If these growers and dispenseries are making millions in profits while pretnding to care about people then they are immoral greedy sinners.
I would happily GIVE my last joint to someone who is hurting. It is called humanity.

The profits of drugs are what keep them illegal.

Thanx for letting me rant,

Oh man am I hurting.lol  :cheesygrinsmiley:

Just joking with you.

I agree with you on a certain degree. I understand that money has to be made by these cannabis clubs. Bills have to be paid after all. Electricity, emplyee wages, rent or mortgage all require money. I have a problem with the ones that charge excessive amounts. I've been to some that charge over $400.00 a ounce after all. It was cheaper on the street. Those are the people I have probs with. The ones who obviously take advantage of the situation. When you think about it, cannabis is cheap to grow. I've had it down to about $6.00 per ounce to grow before. That same ounce would sell for $200.00 or more in a club. To me, that's excessive.

More likely than not, most Starbucks make alot more money tham the majority of Medical Cannabis Dispenceries..

What do you think?

Well... funny you should ask. LOL

Starbucks is another of those evil money grubbing corporations that I dislike.
This is almost a tough question to answer as even I do not know where to draw the line.
Money is not the root of all evil, greed is the root, and money is the nutrient that helps it to grow.
For many years I was a rat in the rat race... following the maze that society built and searching for the proverbial cheese that comes with following the maze refered to as the "American dream". Although I have always been a pot smoker I quested to climb the corperate ladder and always tried to "earn" more and more cheese. Then one day about a year ago I had a realization that I did not like cheese. It was a strange feeling... like everything that I had ever believed was a lie, and that somehow my eyes had been opened and I was unable to close them. It was scary. To make a long story short...(too late LOL) ... I decided that I could no longer be part of the "system". I quit my job, sold everything I owned that had material value and decided that I would speak out against ALL greed and coruption, I do everything I can to not support any large corporation. I cancelled all my bank accts etc and litterally called all my credit card companies and told them that I was not going to give them ANY more money, I told them that I would prefer to go to court and serve the time in jail to repay my debt... and I would have willingly. As a point.... they cancelled my cretid and pursued no other action. I had won a small victory against the machine. As I said I do not know where to draw the line... I have cable and power, a TV and computer etc but I do everything I can to minimize the amount of money that I put into the machine. If I am standing in front of a Starbucks and I want a coffee I will buy one, but I assure you that the minimum wage employee that serves me hears my entire rant as do all the customers. Many times at Wal-Mart or at the phone company my first statement is "can I see your supervisor" then "can I see your Manager" and so on. I make sure that I waste enough of the companys time as to eliminate any profit that they might see from me. I am never rude or abusive, I have all the time in the world and if time is money then I am in control.
This is getting to be a real long story (and I can go on and on) so I will wrap it up with this.....
If you think that no one is listening then speak up... if you think that corporations are not listening the jump up and down screaming "I am not going to play by your rules anymore!" You are paying them... make them earn it.
The last time I got a Starbucks coffee I spent 20 minutes talking with the server, the supervisor, and the manager... in total it cost them about $15 - $20 in wages to sell me a $4.00 cup of coffee... That is how you win in a world that revolves around money.
Sorry for the rant... but you asked. LOL

There are many issue that would take me a long time to explain. I am always polite and logical in these situations... I am not just some idiot on a rampage. We have rights in this world and freedom of speech is one of them. I am using the tools in which I have.. intelegence, knowledge and time. They all offer customer service and I am using it. If you work there then you are being paid by the hour, whether you are serving coffee or are providing customer service by listening to me explain why I dislike your coffee prices.
I could explain myself further but I will just say that I am expressing my rights as a paying consumer not acting like a militant madman with no point. I always conduct myself in a professional polite manner.
BTW... twice you mentioned committing acts of violence towards me and that speaks volumes. I choose to express myself with words and you disagree with me and would express yourself with violence. This is the whole problem with the world... people threatening others with violence to supress someones opinions. Very sad.

Do we the People have the right to Engage in Lawful Free Enterprise? Yes, we do.The dark environment around us is doing the job they have been appointed & sworn in to do, sanctioned by the people we have voted in.
The price of Marijuana is at an all time high. If the monies ( Gross & Net Profits) made from this business venture that is mentioned in this article, are Properly Taxed and regulated than a Win Win Win situation is accomplished.
There is some concern and question as to the validity of the Medical Documentation process. This does look a little suspicious. There are legitimate medical cases for the use marijuana medically for a variety of medical conditions.
It is only now in these times that the people in certain states have spoken out in support of Medical Marijuana and laws do exist in those states. It is widely believed in the Federal and State Authorities that it is the biggest precursor movement that will soon over turn the Marijuana Laws in every state in the United States. DEA Officials commenting on the conditions and the state of affairs regarding Marijuana & remaining anonymous has said" that when we are told to stop doing our job, that have been sanctioned by the people" than we will. Wake Up Americans, and Vote those Representives out of Office who support these Archaic and Financial draining laws, that hinder the very society that our fore Fathers and Brothers in Arms fought so hard for. Economics tells us that the laws are not working. With all due respect to the Medical Marijuana patients and advocates, the big picture here is "TAXATION & REGULATION" of Marijuana. Once the people have again voted out the morons in office that support punishing people who are involved In the Marijuana Trade, and Taxation by Regulating the growing and distribution and sale of Marijuana in all aspects are achieved on a Federal, State & Local level. Than any crime and punishment associated with this is what people have to keep in mind while running a Business like the one mentioned above. As for the price of over $ 400.00 per ounce that is in the "Eye of the Beholder". If one can go into a place of business and establish a relationship with the proprietor, and make a purchase based upon Choices than so be it. A Win Win Win situation. The Customer buys what they are looking for, The Proprietor offers their wares or products, they are a legitimate Tax Paying Business, The Customer is a Tax Paying Citzen of the United States, The taxes the Business owner pays to the Federal, State & Local Governing Bodies assure them the right to Free Enterprise. Thus making the Government already part of the overall business. So in theory: currently anyone paying Taxes and having claimed income from the Growing and or Sale of Marijuana, has and are being sanctioned by our Government. They are essentially Business Partners at this point.
One must bear in mind that while the Marijuana Movement is rapidly moving forward towards legalization in each & every one of our beautiful 50 states, that the dark environment around you will always have associates in your business. C'mon now keep all Candian and Mexican weed within your own borders. Grow America. Support the Legalization & Taxation of Marijuana. Keep the Money here.
