Besides the obvious misrepresentation of the mission of individuals and organizations in support of medical cannabis legislation, the only thing that can be agreed upon in Peter Komendowski's March 15 article [Iowans should trust science in marijuana debate] is when he mentioned "it is important that medical decisions are left to doctors," because that is exactly what we are asking. Our doctors know that we are out of all other options, and they recommend medical cannabis as treatment based on research and best practices.
We are parents to a 3-year-old girl with intractable epilepsy among other debilitating conditions. We rely heavily on her medical team when it comes to her health and the medications that are administered. Currently she is given 15 prescribed, FDA-approved medications on a daily basis that have very negative side effects.
For the past year she has been part of a clinical trial for the non-FDA-approved drug Epidiolex. While our hopes remained high as we have been on this journey, we have not seen any seizure reduction for our little girl.
Individuals are prescribed non-FDA-approved medications, but those treatments don't have the marijuana stigma tied to them, so no one seems to mind. Recreational marijuana should not even be considered in the same conversation as medical cannabis. Cannabis is medicine. We must have options. We need safe and supported access to medical cannabis in Iowa. She deserves better, sick Iowans deserve better.
