Do Si Dos Through The Hempy With Me

Today I started a new growing journey. Hempy buckets. Inspired by a thread I saw here from @Melville Hobbes Autumn/Winter Two Strains In Hempy and losing a fight with fungus gnats I decided to try a new growing medium for the first time ever. I've always been a soil boy, fox farms was my lord and savior, but its time to branch out.

I bought some 3/4 gallon buckets to get started.

I then drilled a 5/16th hole in each bucket 2 inches from the base

After that I filled them with perlite in preparation.

Once that was done the buckets sat for a couple of weeks while my plant that was in the tent already finished up, at this point I wasn't sure what strain I was going to try growing. However after the completion of the grow that was occupying the tent I planned to use for this hempy adventure I realized that the plant I grew in there, a do si dos was probably going to be scrapped/not provide any meaningful smoke I decided to try the strain a second time.
So I soaked my remaining @Royal Queen Seeds Do Si Dos auto flower seeds over night. While that happened I soaked a couple of rockwool cubes in plain water ph'd to around 5.5 for 24 hours as well.

I've planted my two seeds into their rockwool cubes

Placed them onto a @VIVOSUN seed mat

and threw their humidity dome on

These are sitting on my desk in indirect window light, they have the overhead as supplemental light until they pop and then I'll bring them into the tent and plant them into their buckets. Is this enough light for seedlings?
As I said earlier this is my first try at anything that isn't straight soil, so I'll be asking a lot of questions. I'm working with the general hydroponics flora series of FloraMicro, FloraBloom, and FloraGro nutrients. I also have Botanicare Cal-Mag plus, but I was using that for soil can I use it just the same in this grow or do I need a different cal-mag?
That's all I have for now but I'm excited to start this adventure.
Thanks for hanging out! Cheers! :roorrip:

I don't see anyreason why the calmag you have wouldn't be fine for hempy.
I'm going to tag @bluter and @Braddah Waiheesohai here. I learned a lot about hempy reading their journals.
Glad to see you starting up!

Awesome, love being able to use what I have already

I'm thinking of trying a hempy too, so very interested to see how it goes

Welcome, that's how I started with Mel's grow.

two days after I put the seeds into their cubes I have the start of my first sprout. It's not showing leaves yet but looks like the head will break surface today. The other one hasn't popped yet but I have no issue letting it sit for a while longer.

Do my rockwool cubes look too wet? I had a bit of standing water in the container with them over night because I saw in a video to do so, but they looked really wet for my liking so I dumped the water out this morning.

Day 1
The seedling broke free of the seed shell today and got placed into the tent. I placed the rockwool into the perlite bucket, set my mars hydro FC-E3000 to 60% and watered with 1/4 teaspoon of FloraMicro, FloraGrow, and FloraBloom which is the low side of the recommended feeding chart. I mixed that into a gallon of water and ph'd to 5.5. As I filled the bucket for the first time I realized the hole that I had drilled wasn't big enough to allow for proper flow. I learned this when my perlite began to float out of the bucket. I was able to fix the drain hole though and got a good flow of water.

I also did some investigating on the other seed, I have a tap root on that one so I'm just going to let it cook and then I'll be able to pot it in hopefully a few days.

So there she is, my first seed in something that isn't just dirt. And now onto questions. I left water in the bucket's "reservoir" do I need to water every day at this point? I'm not really sure how to know when it needs water, is it just if the bucket is dry? Also do I have to water with nutrients every water or just once a week?

I use the 3-2-1 method suggested by @bluter
You water every 3rd day in early veg, mid/late veg early flower every other day, and then every day until harvest. I've been deciding when to up frequency by pot weight usually, or when a plant seems to be asking for more.
Nutrients in every watering.
You shouldn't need to worry about over watering in a hempy, but I have had a plant that didn't like as much water as the others, so if one gets droopy and only starts to recover when she's getting close to the next watering you might want to try adding a day to the schedule for that plant.

Day 2
The seedling looks like it liked the first feed, she is now standing straight up and pushing the first set of true leaves. I have the tent light on 24 hours a day at the moment and have a humidifier running trying to get the tent up to around 70% humidity, currently its around 50% so the plant has a humidity dome on it currently. I moved my other rockwool cube/seed into the tent as well to see if maybe the stronger light will help pop it a bit quicker. That one is still in the propagation set up I had it in on my desk.
Here she is today:

Sorry about the yellowing of the picture, that's a strange interaction with my phone camera and the light. I'll work on that for later updates.

When you say water on the third day do you include the day that you water in the count? I.E Water, 1, 2, Water or Water, 1, 2, 3, Water? I'm a programmer and I always think to start from zero but I'm not sure if everyone counts that way

Thanks for hanging out! Cheers! :roorrip:

Day one is the day you water, and then two days without. Water, 2,3, water, 2,3.

Awesome, thanks for clearing that up! Sorry if it was a dumb question but its all new to me so I figured its better to ask than to kill plants

Crap, I wasn't really thinking.
When they're small it's a good idea to trickle some water down into the perlite right at the base of the plant to make sure she's getting enough water, and to lead her taproot down to the res.
For that most use 1/4 strength nutes, not full strength.

No worries, I was doing the trickle down the stem thing as I saw you doing it in your journal. I've been using a touch less then the "low dose" recommendation from the seeding chart. The chart states that for clone/seedling I should use 1.7 ml of each nutrient. I'm using a 1/4 teaspoon or about 1.2ml of each nutrient. I just fed for the second time today and the plant is looking happy so at the moment I'm thinking the mix is ok. I have noticed that the hole I drilled doesn't seem to be big enough to drain right away or its getting clogged between waterings because when I water the pearlite is starting to float before the water comes out of the drain hole. So I'll need to sort that out, maybe it'll fix itself as the plants root more of the perlite?

On to the update for today.
Day 4:
Sorry, just realized I didn't update yesterday. I took pictures but never made a post. I'll be better about that in the future.
The plant got its second feeding today. It seems to be happy, still nice and green and looks to be starting to push a second set of true leaves. I still have the humidity dome on it, but I'm thinking in a couple of days I'll be able to take that off. I have the lights running 24hours to help with cold issues in the tent and the plant seems to be liking it. As it get older I'll drop back to a more traditional 18/6 schedule.

Had to grab a shot of the stream, you know for science ;)

In exciting news the second seed has popped! So here is day 1 of plant 2
Day 1:

That's all for today thanks for hanging out! Cheers! :roorrip:

Plant 1 Day 5
Not much of a change today for this plant, still working on pushing out the second set of true leaves. It might be my eyes but it looks like the leaves are getting a bit lighter starting from the center vein of the leaves. I'll have to keep an eye on that.

Plant 2 Day 2
Bit of a change for this one, she's standing straighter and is pushing her first set of true leaves.

She does have a bit of a droop to the leaves though so I might have to make some kind of adjustments, but I don't want to react too quickly and cause issues trying to fix a problem that isn't there.

That's all for today, thanks for hanging out! Cheers! :roorrip:

Plant 1 day 6
Watering day. The plant is looking good second set of true leaves are coming in nicely. Did a water today with 1.7ml of all three Flora nutrients as is the recommended low dose feeding, this plant handled it well last time so I figure I'll stay on the low dose for a few weeks or until the plant tells me it needs more food.

Plant 2 day 3
This plant is looking good still a touch droopy but that just might be this plant's prerogative, and I'm ok with that. First set of true leaves are growing in well. This plant will get watered tomorrow.

Short update today but nothing much has changed yet, once the roots hit the water I'm sure I'll see some major growth but until then,
Thanks for hanging out! Cheers! :roorrip:
