PROVIDENCE, R.I.–The latest applicants vying to open the state's first "compassion centers" to distribute medical marijuana include a pastor and public figures in Pawtucket.
The state announced Friday that it had accepted 18 applications during its second round of review after none of the initial applications qualified.
Among them, former state Democratic Party chairman William Lynch, who recently lost a bid for Congress, and former Pawtucket police chief George L. Kelly III. They're in a Pawtucket group hoping to open a storefront cannabis dispensary at the former site of the To Kalon Club, a men's club.
Another applicant was West Warwick pastor Erik Johansson, who wants to grow the drug at his church, Prospect Ministries, Inc. Johansson faces felony drug charges after police allegedly seized 183 marijuana plants in a September raid at the church.
