Operators of medical marijuana dispensaries want to locate in Dixon, but the City Council is trying to nip their desires in the bud.
The council made a decision last month to reverse a four-year ordinance that had allowed dispensaries in the city.
Tuesday, the council will vote on the ordinance that says the city will not approve business licenses or land uses for enterprises or purposes that are contrary to federal, state or local laws or ordinances.
Councilmen Dane Besneatte and Michael Ceremello voted against adopting that specific ordinance and didn't agree that dispensaries should be prohibited from the city.
The city revisited its 5-year-old ordinance in hopes of clearing up the language to match limits by the state's attorney general.
That's why the council was asked last month to consider options of how to respond to conflict between the 2004 ordinance and the federal law under the Controlled Substances Act.
Even if the dispensaries were still allowed in Dixon, city staffers said it could be difficult for the owners to find a spot to set up shop.
Medical marijuana dispensaries could only locate in buildings zoned for professional/administrative.
Community Development Director David Dowswell explained that there was only one vacancy meeting those requirements in the area of Market Street and Ary Lane, and the dispensary owners still needed a thumbs up from the owner of the building.
It was noted during the meeting that the owner of the vacant space would not agree to having a dispensary occupy the space.
The Dixon City Council meets at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chamber, 600 East A St.
