Steven Richmond, 25, of Helena Number Two, Mahaica, and a deportee who was caught by the police at De Hoop, some 70 miles up the Berbice River after another drug eradication exercise, has been remanded until April 30, next.

The charge followed a raid conducted by ranks of ‘B’ division on Saturday last. He was remanded by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo when he appeared before her at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Richmond had pleaded not guilty to charges of cultivating prohibited plants and possession of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

The accused was allegedly caught in a 13 ½ acre plot where there were about 10 marijuana fields. He was allegedly tending to plants that were between two feet and six feet in height.

The arresting ranks said that he also had in his possession 550 kg of marijuana and more than 5000 plants.

Prosecutor King, who opposed bail, contended that there was no special circumstance that permitted the granting of bail. He also cited the gravity of the offence.

Kaieteur News understands that the raiding party was headed by Commander Steve Merai.

The man had told police that he was at the camp for some two months and was the farm attendant.

At the time of the police raid, four of them were at the camp, including two Jamaicans, who upon seeing the police, fled into the nearby bushes.

We don't need to import immigrants to cultivate marijuana. We Americans do it well. Deport the immigrants.

This was not in the United States...
