The medical marijuana organization selected to serve patients in Strafford, Rockingham and Belknap counties is planning to open their cannabis dispensary in Dover.
Temescal Wellness, which was selected by the Department of Health and Human Services to operate a cannabis Alternative Treatment Center (ATC) in the eastern part of the state, selected the industrial park off Crosby Road for their retail location. It is about two and half miles west from the Spaulding Turnpike's Exit 8 on Route 9 that heads to Barrington.
“The primary reason (for selecting the location) is patient access,” said Ted Rebholz, president Temescal Wellness.
Rebholz said the nonprofit organization chose the Crosby Road location after looking at areas where the population resides as well as municipalities that provided “thoughtful” zoning ordinances to where to where marijuana facilities could operate.
Earlier this summer, Dover City Council approved zoning changes regarding where an ATC could be located in the city. Before Temescal Wellness can open a facility, according to the new ordinance, they need to submit a detailed floor plan as well as how the facility will be secured. The security plans needs to be approved by the Dover Police Department.
As of Tuesday afternoon, no plans have been submitted to the planning board for review. Per state law, there will be a hearing on the proposed location in Dover. The date has yet to be set.
Marijuana will not be cultivated at the Crosby Road site. Instead, the Temescal Wellness plans to grow the cannabis at a location in Manchester. The organization also plans to operate a dispensary in Peterborough to serve patients in the southwestern area of the state. The state is broken into four geographic locations.
Strafford, Rockingham and Belknap are in area one. Peterborough serves area three.
The marijuana growing facility planned for North Rochester is not connected to Temescal Wellness. Instead, that growing facility is to provide cannabis products for a dispensary planned for Plymouth, which is in area four.
