A bill allowing children to use medical marijuana based oils to treat seizures is released by the state Senate Health and Social Services Committee.
The cannabis oil bill, sponsored by Senator Ernie Lopez and co-sponsored by more than 20 others, would expand Delaware's medical marijuana laws to allow physicians to certify the use of cannabis oil to treat children who suffer from intractable epilepsy and dystonia.
Right now, no form of medical marijuana is legal for anyone under 18 in Delaware. Senator Lopez did stress to the committee that the oil does not contain enough THC, the active chemical in marijuana to get someone high.
The bill, known as "Rylie's Law" is named after Rylie Maedler, a 9-year-old from Rehoboth Beach, who is recovering from surgery to remove a bone tumor in her face. She started suffering seizures after the surgery. Rylie and her mother both addressed the Senate committee on Wednesday.
