The addition of three more conditions to Connecticut's medical marijuana program cleared another hurdle Friday.
Consumer Protection Commissioner Michelle H. Seagull announced in a statement Friday that she would follow the Medical Marijuana Program Board of Physicians' recommendation to add the three conditions: hydrocephalus with intractable headaches, intractable migraines, and trigeminal neuralgia.
Seagull told the Courant Thursday that she would likely follow the recommendations, but Friday's announcement ensures the additions will move to the next round of approval.
"After DCP drafts a regulation to add the conditions, there will be an additional public hearing and comment period," Seagull said in the statement. "The regulation then will be reviewed by the Office of the Attorney General, and ultimately require the approval of the Regulation Review Committee of the General Assembly."
Seagull said Thursday that she expected the regulations to be drafted by the end of the month, but the additional reviews by the attorney general and a legislative committee could take as long as a year.
The three conditions approved by Seagull Friday join four others that were approved in February: fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, shingles and muscular dystrophy. There are currently 22 conditions for which adults in Connecticut may receive medical marijuana, and six conditions for children under 18.
"I want to thank the Board for the time they invest, and for their guidance," Seagull said in Friday's statement. "I also want to thank those who testified for their bravery, and for telling their stories on Wednesday. We know our program is at its best when we hear from the medical community, and from patients whose lives can be improved by this medication."
