In May, Governor Dannel P. Malloy signed into law an adjustment to the states marijuana laws, allowing minors to use marijuana in certain medical instances. That law, supported by all of Branford and Guilford's state legislators, will result in a small increase in space for the local shoreline dispensary.
Bluepoint Apothecary, a medical marijuana dispensary in Branford located behind Planet Fitness on route 1, will move to an adjacent, stand-alone building, formerly Sovereign Bank. The facility will make use of the first floor, with separate rooms for adults and children.
Since the dispensary first opened over 2 years ago, Police report the facility has been largely without incident, a concern raised by residents prior to its opening. Owner and pharmacist Nicolas Tamborrino told the commission that there was a break in through the front about a year ago, but the person was unable to gain access to the rear of the building or any product.
Public Act 16-23, which gave permission for minors with certain conditions and doctors approval to use medical marijuana, also increased the conditions where it can be used. The law adds items that fall under the category of "debilitating medical condition," including terminal illness requiring end-of-life care, irreversible spinal cord injury with objective neurological indication of intractable spasticity, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, severe epilepsy or uncontrolled intractable seizure disorder. Previously, the law included cancer, multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, HIV and Parkinsons.
The law also prohibits marijuana products in a smokable, inhalable or vaporizable form to be distributed for minors.
