GRIDLEY – The Butte County Board of Supervisors today passed an ordinance governing the growing of medical marijuana in the county's jurisdiction.

The new law prohibits grows on lots smaller than a half-acre, and sets limits on the number of plants allowed on larger parcels.

There are also limits on growing in proximity to schools, churches, drug-treatment centers and some other facilities.

The vote was 4-1, with Chico Supervisor Larry Wahl the lone no vote. He said since federal law prohibits growing marijuana, the county had no authority to regulate it.

The hearing was conducted at the Butte County Fairgrounds due to large crowds the issue has drawn in the past.
