Ari and Weizy aren't exactly lap dogs.
They love to run, play, and even jump up on reporters. They have boundless energy, but their owners J.C. and Angie Jenkins say they weren't always this healthy.
"One night we came home and his head was bobbling. He had no muscle control and he was really dizzy," J.C. recalled.
J.C. had no idea what was happening. So when it happened again he pulled out his camera. J.C. says the video helped his veterinarian diagnose Weizy, and later, Ari, with partial grand mal seizures.
So they followed the vet's orders and put them on a bevy of drugs -- drugs they say only made things worse.
They didn't know what to do until they saw a CNN special about cannabis oil helping a young girl with her seizures.
"So we were like, well it works on people so ...," J.C. said.
So he used his medical marijuana card to buy some CBD oil.
They give the dogs a dose in the morning and one at night. J.C. made sure there's no THC in the oil. He knows how bad it can be for dogs.
It took a few months for the oil to take effect, but eventually they were blown away by the results. J.C. says Weizy went from having four seizures a week to none at all. He says Weizy hasn't suffered a relapse in a year and a half.
But we wanted to know what the experts say about this treatment, so we asked DoveLewis veterinarian Dr. Ladan Mohammad-Zadeh to weigh in.
"History has shown us some of the most useful medicines have been plant-derived, so there's no reason to think it can't offer us some more therapy," Ladan said.
But Ladan says she would advise her clients to try traditional medicines first. She says there needs to be more research on CBD oil before she could make a definitive decision.
J.C. and Angie aren't holding back. They say one natural medicine has replaced all those pills, and helped restore their dog's health and energy along the way.
