A gang of marijuana brokers -- who arranged weekly shipments of hundreds of
pounds of B.C. crop to Ontario -- has been busted by police in the two
provinces.
The group, described as an Asian organized-crime group, used CP and CN Rail
lines to ship boxes and goalie-size duffel bags filled with "B.C. Bud" to
Toronto and then store the product in a Magnetic Dr. warehouse.
Police in Toronto and B.C. executed 15 search warrants on Monday, seizing
more than $1.3 million, two loaded semi-automatic pistols, a loaded Tec-9
machine pistol and about 385 kilos of marijuana worth about $2.5 million
wholesale.
LARGEST CASH HAUL
An added bonus was the seizure of a $100,000 pill press used to make drugs
such as Ecstasy. The machine is one of an estimated four or five in the
Canadian underworld.
OPP Insp. Jim Hutchinson said the $1.3-million cash seizure was the largest
in the history of the force's drug enforcement section.
OPP arrested two women Monday with about 45 kilos of marijuana in a van
leaving the Magnetic Dr. location and then arrested two men inside the
storage unit.
CUSTOMS TIP
Police in B.C. raided 13 homes and a warehouse in Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey
and Richmond, said Deputy Chief Peter Ditchfield of the Organized Crime
Agency in B.C.
Eight people face drug- and firearms-related charges at a later date.
The investigation was sparked by information from Vancouver and Canada
Customs.
The weekly rail shipments of between 270 and 360 kilos were sent to Toronto.
Most were then shipped to the U.S.
Two Toronto men, Hieu Huu Tran, 37, and The Hung Pham, 30, are charged with
conspiracy to traffic, trafficking and possession for the purpose of
trafficking. Two women, Hang Thi Vu, 24, and Dung Pham, 46, of Toronto, are
charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of
marijuana.
