A 22-year-old city man was arrested after police found legally obtained medical marijuana in his car that they said was packaged for sale on the street.
Edward Goralnik Jr. was arraigned Tuesday at state Superior Court in Middletown on charges including possession of marijuana with intent to sell and possession of marijuana within 1,500 feet of a school zone, along with other drug charges and motor vehicle offenses.
Goralnik allegedly told police he bought the marijuana legally from The Healing Corner dispensary in Bristol. He said he weighed the marijuana into equal amounts and packaged it into "dime bags" for sale on the street, according to police.
Police did not say why Goralnik has a medical marijuana prescription. The legislature approved medical marijuana sales in 2012. Dispensaries began to sell the drug last year. Physicians may certify patients for 11 conditions, including cancer, epilepsy and Crohn's disease.
According to police, officers spotted Goralnik's car Jan. 3 in the downtown area with illegal blue LED lights. Also, the car's passenger side brake light was not working, police said. Goralnik was pulled over on Pearl Street at about 10:15 p.m.
Officer Andrew Wasilewski said in his arrest report that he and Officer Matthew Tiano approached the car. Wasilewski said he could smell the odor of fresh unburnt marijuana when Goralnik rolled down his window. Goralnik told Wasilewski he had a "little bit" of marijuana in the car, according to the report.
Goralnik told the officers he was able to legally possess the marijuana because of a prescription given to him by a doctor. He showed the officers a registration card that stated he was able to possess 2.5 ounces of marijuana.
Police said they found 20 plastic baggies of marijuana weighing about 25 grams in Goralnik's possession. Police said they also found 51 dimebags of marijuana, a small digital scale and two bill folds of money, one containing $55 and the other $72.
In the trunk of Goralnik's car, police said they found 7.5 grams of marijuana in a prescription bottle hidden in Goralnik's trunk behind a subwoofer. Also in the trunk were five smaller prescription bottles, four of which were filled with marijuana, according to the report. The bottles were labeled "The Healing Corner" dispensary, 159 East Main St., Bristol.
Three cell phones were also found in the car, police said, along with one in Goralnik's possession. Police seized the four phones as asset forfeiture, along with the cash, according to the report.
Goralnik is on probation for a 2012 burglary-related felony conviction out of Meriden, police said. He also has previous arrests for first-degree criminal trespass, sixth-degree larceny, violation of probation, operating under the influence and possession of marijuana.
He was released after posting $50,000 bail.
