A special task force will play a big role in the future of regulations for medical marijuana dispensaries in Colorado Springs.
Springs City Council put a six-month moratorium on any new dispensaries a few weeks ago.
"I got involved because in my own neighborhood, a pot grow house popped up and I was very concerned about that," said John Harding.
Harding is a former 11 News anchor and a realtor with RE/MAX Real Estate Group, but has spoken in support of regulations at City Council meetings before. City Council put him on the task force that was formed Tuesday.
Harding's main concern is people operating as "caregivers" and growing marijuana inside homes in neighborhoods.
"There are some areas of concern that have to be fixed between those individuals that are abiding by the law and doing what they're supposed to, and the folks that are taking advantage of the laws," said Harding.
The following are also on the Medical Marijuana Task Force:
• Councilman and Task Force Chair Larry Bagley.
• Energy Distribution Manager Brian Anderson, Colorado Springs Utilities.
• Chair of the El Paso County Citizen Outreach Group and Director Emeritus of the Council of Neighbors and Organizations Jan Doran.
• Owner Dale Hecht, Green Pharm.
• Owner and Attorney Charles Houghton, Charles T. Houghton, P.C., emphasizing the legal and regulatory framework for operating medical marijuana businesses, licensing medical marijuana centers, legal research, appeals, litigation support, real estate, construction law, municipal, land use and zoning law, mechanics liens, business entity formation, contracts and landlord tenant matters.
• President and CEO of Conspire! and member of Colorado Springs Forward Lynette Crow-Iverson.
• City Clerk Sarah Johnson.
• Fire Marshal Brett Lacey.
• Commander Sean Mandel.
• City Attorney Wynetta Massey.
• Owner Tom Scudder, A Wellness Centers.
• Deputy Chief of Staff Bret Waters.
• Director, Planning Peter Wysocki.
A statement released by the city said the job of the task force is to "review, study, develop, evaluate laws and regulations pertaining to marijuana businesses, including but not limited to location and licensing criteria, fees, advertising and other time, place, manner and number regulations."
The task force's report will be delivered to City Council by March 21, 2016.
