When John and Alicia Rotherham came before the Log Lane Village Board of Trustees seeking licenses for recreational and medical marijuana establishments, they said they intended to bring more than just a store and dispensary to the small town.

They also had plans to hold and sponsor community events and activities, much like they have done at their original flagship Garden City establishment. They kicked that off last fall before their store actually opened by providing a grant to Kids At Their Best for the nonprofit's after-school programs in Log Lane.

And the idea of offering community events will come together this weekend, as Nature's Herbs & Wellness Center II holds its grand opening celebration with live music and free barbecue for community members who stop by, according to store Manager Lacey Walker.

The store opened its doors in early January, but now Walker and her 10-person staff are ready to truly celebrate.

The celebration will last throughout the day on Saturday, with "specials, deals and snacks" from when the store opens at 8 a.m. until it closes at 6:50 p.m., she said. Those who want to enter the store, though, will need to show their ID's to prove they are 21 or older.

From noon until 4 p.m., there will be live music and free food catered by Cry Baby BBQ.

Nature's Herbs & Wellness Center II is located at 17224 N. Frontage Road on the south side of Log Lane, tucked up against Interstate 76. What once was a generic, commercial office space now is a welcoming, flower-power themed shop that just happens to sell marijuana and related products, like edibles, smoking and vaping accessories and branded clothing.

Walker hopes that people will come to the grand opening celebration and check out the store and see what it's about. She said that the Rotherhams' focus with marijuana was just as much on helping people and helping the communities where he does business as it is just making money from selling pot.

"We definitely want to make people feel comfortable when they walk in the door," she said. "We want to make them feel it's OK to be here."

While Log Lane's Nature's Herbs & Wellness Center II is not yet set up as a medical dispensary due to the requirement for growing a percentage on site, the Rotherhams did get a license for that from the town, and it is likely to be something that will happen down the road.
