Miami High School Assistant Baseball Coach and teacher, Yancy Cody, 32, of Miami, was arrested Thursday for possession of marijuana, a second and subsequent offense, making it a felony.

According to the probable cause affidavit from Ottawa County District Attorney Drug Task Force Investigator Chris Morris, investigators had received information within the last couple months Cody had been smoking marijuana.

The report says a video taken during a class taught by Cody by an unknown student was provided to investigators.

"A caption on the video stated something to the effect, he is high today," the probable cause statement said.
Cody is currently on probation for a Oct. 2, 2013 conviction for possession of marijuana in Ottawa County District Court. Court records show Cody entered a plea of guilty, was sentenced to a one-year deferred sentence on July 14, 2014 and placed on probation and released. Cody is subject to the rules and conditions of probation which include being subject to search.

According to the statement, at 8:20 p.m., Jan. 29, Ottawa County Detective Holli Goforth , BIA K-9 officer Josh Tannehill and Investigator Chris Morris went to Cody's residence in Miami and made contact with Cody.

The statement said: "Upon knocking on the door Cody exited the house in an extremely nervous and almost distraught manner. Affiant attempted to calm Cody down and after a short period Cody continued to act in this manner and was handcuffed for his and officers safety."

Cody then admitted to having marijuana in his house when questioned by law enforcement.

Officers searched the home where Cody pointed to a plastic bag on a table in the living room in plain view containing marijuana, and next to this bag another larger plastic bag containing marijuana residue.

Officers also located a wooden pipe and another plastic bag containing marijuana residue in a bedroom which Cody told the officers was his according to the statement.

Cody was arrested, transported to Ottawa County Jail and released on a $2,500 bond.

Cody's standing within the Miami Public Schools system was unknown at press time.
