Two years after residents roundly rejected the retail sale of marijuana, Milliken officials are again plotting for pot.
The town will host a community meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Milliken Police Department, 1201 Broad St., Milliken, to discuss allowing the sale of marijuana in town.
In November 2015, residents voted against allowing the sale of recreational marijuana in Milliken 64 percent to 36 percent. It was a moment of "not-in-my-backyard" epiphany for the town that just a year earlier approved recreational pot sales statewide 53 percent to 47 percent.
Milliken Mayor Beau Woodcock said officials have been in discussions for about a year, and it may not come down to another vote of the people. Woodcock added that he has no problem with marijuana being sold in town.
"You can drive past the liquor store if you don't like drinking; you can drive past the convenience store if you don't like smoking; Why can't you drive past a dispensary?" Woodcock said.
Woodcock doesn't partake, saying his main motivation is the revenue Milliken could generate if it allowed the sale of marijuana.
"It's going to be huge for us (in terms of growing as a community," Woodcock said. "There will be money to fix roads and sidewalks that are deteriorating."
One company is already interested. Woodcock confirmed Nature's Herbs and Wellness, which has multiple locations in Colorado, has been in contact with city officials.
John Rotherham, owner of the company, could not immediately be reached for comment.
Woodcock said he has heard positive and negative feedback since officials began talking about marijuana again.
But the town has been pretty steadfast in its disapproval of retail pot.
A summer 2015 survey lined up nearly perfectly with 2015 election results.
Woodcock said it doesn't have to go to a vote of the people, although the community meeting is about gathering input. He said the town council could unilaterally vote to allow a retail marijuana store to open
