Durango, C.O. - Recreational marijuana is still illegal in New Mexico. That's why people cross into Colorado. One Durango woman says she now gives cannabis tours because so many people are making the trip.
"You are entering one of the many legal recreational marijuana dispensaries in Durango, Colorado," Durango Artisanal Tour owner Regina Wells said.
For a fee starting $120 a person, she shows people how to consume and enjoy recreational marijuana in Colorado.
She also offers other tours; each one starts at a local dispensary.
"I am not allowed to buy them marijuana, so they have to come here and purchase it themselves," Wells said.
She said a lot of her guests are from New Mexico and they must follow rules once they decide what they want.
"You can buy an ounce," Wells said.
Visitors also are only allowed to use the marijuana in Colorado.
Wells typically serves a lunch, and shows people how to smoke by using a bong. She also teaches them how not to overdose.
"It is nice to get them around," she said.
She walks people around Durango, drives them into the mountains or even takes them to a local flower farm.
Wells has her guests go there and make arrangements or flower crowns.
"A little bit of a focal flower and you secure it with your twine," she said. "And you wear it the rest of the night downtown."
Wells hopes her tours give people a new perspective on pot.
"Just walk away thinking they're not so afraid of it anymore," she said.
