The City Council unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance Wednesday night that would permanently ban medical marijuana dispensaries in the city. Last month the council repealed the city's law regulating such dispensaries after the U.S. Supreme Court weighed in on the medical marijuana issue.
The court ruled that federal authorities can prosecute pot users in California on federal charges, despite the voter-approved initiative that legalized the use of marijuana with a doctor's recommendation. No one from the public commented on the proposed ban Wednesday night, and the council passed the ban's initial reading with no discussion.
