Ca. - The cultivation of medical marijuana will be at the top of the city Internal Affairs Committee agenda Tuesday, with the committee expected to make a recommendation on whether the practice should be regulated and to what degree.

At its Oct. 6 meeting, the Chico City Council contemplated whether an ordinance prohibiting outdoor marijuana grows should be drafted.

The city received several complaints from residents claiming they suffered from health problems as a result of the smell of outdoor marijuana grows in their neighborhood.

The council referred the matter back to the Internal Affairs Committee for further discussion, failing to pass a motion that would have directed city staff to draft an ordinance regulating medical marijuana cultivation.

Tuesday, the committee will revisit the issue, as well as potential other restrictions on the growth of medical marijuana.

City Attorney Lori Barker has advised the committee to look at limiting the amount of marijuana grown on a specific property to the plants necessary for the residents of the property.

Although the issue of medical marijuana dispensaries has been brought up at several City Council and committee meetings, the matter is not specifically included on Tuesday's agenda.

Barker noted in a staff report to the committee that no one has applied to amend the city municipal code to allow for dispensaries.
