SANTA ANA -- The American Medical Marijuana Association has called off its
planned citizens' arrest of Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona. Although
Sheriff Carona has told the L.A. Times he "does not recognize the right to
use marijuana under Proposition 215," AMMA officials were unable to find
any actual cases of medical marijuana violations in Orange County.
Steve Kubby, National Director of the American Medical Marijuana Association
said he was delighted to learn that, "despite his public statements, Sheriff
Carona is lawfully respecting the right of bona fide patients to grow and
possess medical marijuana in Orange County under the Compassionate Use Act."
According to reports from local medical marijuana patients, Kubby said
"deputies in Orange County are walking away from gardens with as many as 40
plants." One patient that was confronted by five squad cars and a
helicopter said his doctor's letter and a letter from Attorney General Bill
Lockyer rescinding the Lungren Guidelines was sufficient to end a raid.
Kubby said he is cautiously optimistic, but urged any bona fide patients who
are being harassed by O.C. officials to file a complaint with the O.C. Grand
Jury, which has agreed to review such complaints.
