A recent poll says the majority of North Carolina residents support the legalization of medical marijuana. The study by Public Policy Polling reports that 58 percent of people in the Tarheel state agree that using marijuana for medical reasons should be legal.
One such person is Perry Parks, who is a 29-year veteran of the United States Army. Parks said he suffered a back injury more than a decade ago, which left him in constant and severe pain.
Now he said that he breaks the law everyday because after years of taking other medications, the only relief he gets is from cannabis.
Parks said he supports a bill that state Representative Kelly Alexander, Jr. (D-Meck) will introduce Wednesday in the house to legalize marijuana.
"In this state if a veteran goes to the VA and tests positive for cannabis he's told to leave the clinic and come back when he can provide a clean sample this is immoral." said Parks.
"This is for people who are undergoing chemotherapy. There are a lot of reasons that medical cannabis will help them, Alexander said on the phone from Raleigh Tuesday.
Rep. Alexander said that his bill is only for medical marijuana, which he said helps patients in a number of ways. Alexander said the state could benefit greatly from legalized marijuana.
"There are some tax advantages. We could generate between $60-$100 million alone," he said. "Personally, I believe if this were put to a vote of the people it would b a no-brainer."
