Charlie Crist's Boss To Try And Legalize Pot

Charlie Crist's boss and biggest supporter, personal injury lawyer John Morgan, has signed on as chairman of a group leading a medical marijuana campaign in Florida, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

The announcement was made by Kim Russell, founder and vice president of the Orlando-based group, "People United for Medical Marijuana," and she seems to believe God is on her side.

"The team we are putting together have the expertise to get the job done right. This is exactly what we have been working towards for four years," Russell said in the Sentinel report. "God is hearing our prayers — keep up the good work!"

Morgan, co-founder of the law firm Morgan & Morgan, has serious influence in the Obama White House. He collected more than $1.7 million for Obama's re-election or for the Democratic National Committee, making him one of the campaign's biggest bundlers nationwide. That influence is expected to pay huge dividends once Crist announces his run for governor.

Crist, Florida's former Republican governor, is seen as the leading Democratic candidate to challenge Gov. Rick Scott in 2014.

Morgan's decision to head up the medical marijuana legalization effort is in line with a successful Democratic strategy of building coalitions of individuals with varying interests to vote as a bloc, assuring greater electoral success.

There are two medical marijuana bills in the Florida Legislature, both sponsored by Democratic lawmakers.

Interestingly, Russell is a member of the Libertarian group, Campaign for Liberty.

Colorful former Republican operative Roger Stone, who has a tattoo of Richard Nixon on his back, told the Daily Caller in February he will decide by the end of the year whether he will run for governor of Florida on the Libertarian Party ticket.

And if he decides to run, he says he will make marijuana a big focus of his campaign.

Adrian Wyllie, the chair of the Florida Libertarian Party, also announced earlier this year that he will run for governor.

While these candidates have little hope of winning, a third-party candidate is sure to play the role of spoiler in what is expected to be a tight race, and any attention drawn to the marijuana legalization issue will assist in this effort.
